Math Help
June 24th, 2008Hello, Math student, my name is Alex, and I put up this page to offer you math help!
Math can be very difficult for some people, no doubt about it. These individuals need math help. Sometimes it can be such a nemesis that a young student could mistakenly say that “Math just ain’t for me”. There are millions of people who truly believe that there is no way that they can or will ever fall in love with Mathematics. I was one of those people twenty-seven years ago.
I found out that the only way to ever develop a truly affectionate appreciation for Math was by practicing continuously, taking it easy when solving a problem, not losing one’s patience. Naturally, this sounds easier said than done, but I tell you that it is actually possible to find that mathematician within us and with the right amount of math help, conquer the Numerical Sciences (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) with a refreshing perseverance that will stun even you!
By the late 1970’s I was just a regular High School student with no direction, pretty much like most kids, right? I began to take Math courses that were more intimidating with every passing year: Algebra, Trigonometry, and so on. By the time I was in 10th grade I had no idea of what was about to happen to me. Having had some very minor success in Math, I ventured to take a Precalculus & Analytical Geometry course in my junior year. My professor was a very skilled teacher who really knew how to present Mathematics in a very eloquent and effective manner. Well, my first exams were all F’s. My father, who was also a Math Guru as I am today, helped me immensely but things really were getting ugly in the beginning. I developed a mental block larger than an anvil and there was no way that I could dissolve it in my head. With time, lots of encouragement and math help from both my teacher and my father who always believed in me by saying “you can do this” or “trust me, this is a lot simpler than you think”, and with extreme patience and incessant practice and math help, I devoted myself to the pursuit of that Math control, a conquest of Mathematics, so to speak. I found that with math help from great instructors from your school, your family, or any positive support group (such as tutors, great friends, etc.), along with great texts providing a warm outlook on Math, and exciting problems that challenged my mind, I improved greatly.
I began to take interest in Math contests, advanced courses, my self-confidence was overwhelming. Feeling so self-reliant empowered me to excel further and further. I had created a monster. I ended up obtaining a B+ in Precalc/Analytical Geo. I obtained a 770 score in the then-College Board Math Level II Achievement Test. Receiving the proper amount of math help had shown great results.
I decided to simply not be afraid of Math. In my Senior year I elected to take the AP Calculus course so that I could say: “Math, I am going for the kill”. After participating in various local and state contests and winning 1st and 2nd Place awards, I entered the Mathematical Association of America High School contests in early 1982. The result? I became one of two students who ever broke the 100-point barrier in my state and almost got invited to participate in the Mathematical Olympiad which was, and continues to be, the ultimate competition for high school students all over the world.
I have to admit that I was heartbroken that I did not make it to the Olympiad by 4 or 5 points but the result was that I had achieved a level of excellence that made me, my father and my professor extremely proud. I was awarded the Highest Honor in Mathematics when I graduated from High School and went on to take the AP Calculus BC and AP Physics Examinations passing them for college credit. In college, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I made the necessary arrangements to take the Putnam Examination which was offered for College Students with superior Math skills but eventually, with my very busy Electrical Engineering degree in the works, I ended up unable to take it.
Today, after all these years, I still happen to be obsessed with Math to the point where I actually thrive on the very art of tutoring and providing math help to students who believe, as I once did, that Math simply “just ain’t for them”. I discovered in the past that only with warm teachings accentuated by some very humorous and friendly contents, and with the math help of wonderful problems that truly illustrate Math principles without getting to be outrageously complicated, you can also persevere and eventually conquer Math, just like I did so long ago. I adore Math and I personally intend to convert as many people as I can from hopeless Math haters to rewarded Math lovers. With the right amount of math help, anything is possible.
This is why I have finally decided to open YourMathGuru. I am available for math help. Call me at my numbers below, email or fax me whenever you wish questions or problems that you may have. This math help service is free at all times (although I will gladly and most gratefully accept donations sent to the address below - after all, I have to make a living). I will help you as long as I manage to get to you among all of my pupils, of course. Parents and teachers can contact me anytime to inquire as for how I can provide math help to your kids or students.
As a side benefit, you may also enjoy, on occasion, the posting on my website of interesting and challenging problems for those kids who, like me, are obsessed with problem-solving for purely recreational purposes….I know, it sounds sick, doesn’t it?
Well, that’s how we become excellent at Math: by tirelessly practicing day in and day out. I’d say that that is the healthiest addiction on Earth!
Once again, you can count on my personal assistance and math help any time of the day, for as long as I am physically able.
